Since the slave trade was abolished in England during the summer of 1807, successive governments have failed to repair the nation they effectively ripped apart for the previous 400 years. From the early 1400’s, we’d been turning up on the shores of this great continent and placing men, women and even children in shackles before loading them onto ships for the three week journey over to Jamaica and the West Indies. Here, they were worked to death on plantations making sugar, and beaten if they dared to show any sign of rebellion to their master. I mean, can you people even imagine that? No? We’ll it’s about time you tried.
When a bill finally made it through the British parliament, and we abolished slavery, people celebrated in the streets and through that would be the end of Africa’s problems. However, most of the individuals who had strong financial interests in the trade simply converted their businesses and started raping the land. That still continues on a massive scale to this very day, which goes part of the way to explaining why so many African children aren’t given the food, clean water, or medical care they need.
Unfortunately, relying on Bono or that shaggy singer who hates Monday’s to make a change is pointless. I can personally guarantee, no matter how much money one-off rock concerts yield, they’re never going to make a significant difference on the African continent. Instead, to improve the lives of the millions of people who live here, we all need to make a commitment to giving what we can each month. You can even donate to charity online these days, so there’s no excuse for not giving Unicef whatever you have left over.
Throughout the entire continent, children are dying unnecessarily every single day from treatable diseases like Measles, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio, Rotavirus, Hepatitis B, Yellow fever and Malaria. Now, every single person reading this post should be ashamed of themselves for not questioning their MP’s or asking for explanations as to why this is allowed to occur. At the end of the day, the amount the UK spends on war in a single year is enough to feed and clothe every single person in Africa. Are we really this heartless?
My friends, I beg you to petition your representatives at every possible opportunity. That was how a few well-meaning men managed to crush a hugely profitable global trade in the early 1800’s, and it’s what we must to do stop the genocide of millions today. Can you honestly look a dying African child in the eyes, knowing you could have made a difference? Are the people who live on this particular continent any less important than your own offspring? Of course not, they are your brothers and sisters, and you should find the current state of affairs to be sickening at best.
There are some very evil people working behind the scenes to keep Africa down, but with enough donations of money and time to the right charities, we can expose them and overturn their reign of terror.
Please my friends, consider my argument.
Thank you.
